It occurred to me while we were chatting that he obviously loves his job and I love the way he always calls me “young lady”! This is a man who starts his working day before 7am and, as Christmas approaches is working very long hours, yet he is always cheerful and ready for a chat, so going into his shop is always a pleasurable experience. 1. I love my job!! Is this you? Or do you just tolerate the work you do? Perhaps you actively dislike what you are doing at the moment? Maybe you did like your job once, but now you are finding it boring or repetitive and it just doesn’t float your boat anymore. Many of us spend the majority of our daily lives at work. We probably spend more time with our work colleagues during the week than we do with our families! It seems mad that we would therefore choose to be in a job that we find neither stimulating nor rewarding. People love their jobs for lots of different reasons. Some people hate being inside, while others would hate to be outside in the winter weather. We are all individuals and there are thousands of jobs out there to choose from and we don’t have to do a job that makes us miserable. 2. Work it out at home If you are not that happy at work or if you are really unhappy, what happens when you go home? Do you leave all your work worries behind or are you taking your work “baggage” home with you? If yes, then how is that affecting the quality of your life outside of work? Amazingly we weren’t put on this earth to be miserable! Too many people live in fear of not having enough money and this keeps them stuck in a job they dislike, wishing their days away and yet getting up each morning and going to work. The only person that can make changes to your life is you, so if you really want to do the work you love, then take some time out and establish exactly what it is you want to do. Oh but you don’t have enough time do you?!! Let me just ask how much time you spend watching TV? Well, you do have the time if you choose to use it in a different way to what you normally do. 3. Find your inner child Still not sure what it is your REALLY want to do? Well pretend you are a child again and think about what you asked Santa for at Christmas time. Then start making a list all over again for you today. Ask yourself why you want these things and then you will really get to the bottom of what motivates you. THE POWER QUESTION What do you LOVE doing? If money was no object what would you choose to do? Ok so you may lie on a beach for the first few weeks, but after that then what would you do? Find someone who does the work you would really like to do and go and have a chat with them and establish if it is really for you. If you need to retrain, think about evening classes while you maintain your income OR save up enough so you can take the plunge of a new career without risking your financial situation. Remember there are plenty of people out there who are making a perfectly good living out of the work you would love to do! So what is to stop you doing the same thing? Are you going to spend your life wondering what it would be like to do what you really want to do or are you going to carry on complaining about the job you currently have and do nothing about it? In the meantime think about how you could make changes in your current job to make it more enjoyable and present a plan to your boss/colleagues to reflect this and see what a difference you can make. 4. Up Close and Personal I managed to bring a nasty bug back from my He also has a new fluorescent exercise sheet as it is turning cold – no doubt he will freak out when he sees it for the first time as he is very suspicious of anything new, so that will be interesting! Until next time have a great couple of weeks! Ann ann@dreamcatcher-lifecoaching.co.uk http://www.dreamcatcher-lifecoaching.co.uk/ The Life Gym is written by Ann Brosnan.
