1. The Pen is Mightier than the Thought

In 1979 a group of Harvard graduates were asked the following question:

“How many of you have clear written goals and how many of you have made plans to accomplish them when you leave this school?”

The response was as follows:

3% had written goals

13% had unwritten goals

84% had no goals at all

Ten years later the same group of graduates were contacted to find out how they were doing.

The three percent who had written goals were earning, or were worth, ten times as much as the remaining graduates!

Writing down your plans and your goals is a very powerful way of keeping yourself on track and ensuring that you take action and constantly move towards the things you want.

Thinking about something is not enough in itself – it is a start but it won’t get you there, as you can see from the example above.

It sounds so simple it seems almost too good to be true doesn’t it? This often means that people don’t do it, as listing your goals seems too easy to have a big impact on your life, but that is often the case with humans: we believe we have to struggle to be successful, which is one very limiting belief! Yes you may have to work hard along the way, but it can be an enjoyable journey if you choose to see it that way.

Just as organisations have goals and probably so do you as part of your personal development at work, having your own personal goals written down will really focus your mind.

2. I have a dream

You can have big dreams and smaller dreams, but it can often be the small actions that add up to a big result.

So think about your goals for the next month, six months, year and five years and that will be a great place to start. You may wish to start with your five year goal and work backwards, the important thing is to write it down and keep referring back to it to check your progress and make adjustments. It is like a car journey from London to Edinburgh – it is not one straight line that gets you there, but a series of different roads that lead you in the right direction and, as long as you have your map, you know where you are going and can take different routes if you come across road works or other hazards.

THE POWER QUESTION

Are you prepared to write a list of your goals for the short medium and long term THIS WEEK and see what difference that makes to your life?

Or are you just going to carry on in the same old routine and wondering why other people seem to be more successful/relaxed/happier etc. than you?

3. A Place in the Sun

Have you ever sat watching this programme and thought “I’d like to do that”?

Well read on and hear how Joanna Losack wrote down her dream and made it come true:

“I had a dream of owning a house in the mountains so that me and the kids could "get back to nature" - have some time and space to get away from the routines and stresses of everyday life.  The dream was a million miles away in terms of my finances at the time.  But just one year after committing my dream to paper - I am still pinching myself and can't believe its come true.

I discovered Bulgaria - the most beautiful country - and bought a traditional stone and timber house there, overlooking the pine forests for just £3,500!  It was an amazing adventure and the whole process opened up so many new opportunities.  I returned to the UK after my trip, wrote a book about How To Buy Property in Bulgaria and now have a website and a support group for others who may want to do the same.

So if you want to catch your dream - write it down - put it out there to the world - you never know what might happen!

If you would like to know more about how to buy a rural retreat for under £5000 or just want to find out more about the best kept secret in Europe, then please visit http://www.themagicofbulgaria.com/ and sign up for my monthly newsletter”.

I subscribe to Joanna’s newsletter and have just bought her e-book on the subject, which is full of useful tips from someone who has done it all herself.

4. What are you doing on May 7th?

Do you live near Brentwood in Essex and are you interested in coaching but not sure what it can do for you?

Well coach Robin Lawrence is running a couple of events to get you started and to help you ‘Spring Clean your Life”. They are taking place at the Holiday Inn Hotel.

Robin will be doing a number of exercises to find out where you are now and to plan how you are going to take your life forward and this will of course involve writing it down!

Robin is an excellent coach (and no I am not being paid to write this!) and I know that this is an opportunity not to miss, so visit his website at www.matrix7.co.uk/springclean.html to find out more.

Alternatively, if you think you know of someone who may be interested then just forward this newsletter on to them now!

5. Up Close and Personal

Paddy (my horse for new readers) is not going to be happy as he goes into hospital tomorrow for an operation on his sarcoids. Despite all his treatment at the end of last year the sarcoids are sprouting back again (seems they are rather like dandelions – dig up one and two appear in its place) so this is the best chance of getting rid of them, for a while at least. I will have to explain to the nurses his cotton wool phobia so they are prepared for when he freaks at the sight of it. He is expected to stay in for 5-6 days as it involves a general anaesthetic plus lots of antibiotics as he will have a big wound afterwards.  Boy is he going to be a grump after that and I must admit to having a few “sink” moments when the vet told me the news.

I have taken up a new class at the gym namely “Dance Fusion” which has made me realise that a stiff lower back presents a particular challenge when trying to do anything remotely resembling a wiggle or shake of the hips! Great fun though and a good workout!

I spent a good few hours over Easter engrossed in The Other Side of the Story by Marian Keys. A really good read and great to take on holiday with you.

Have a good couple of weeks!
