We all tend to have habits and routine – just ask my horse who gets very grumpy when his routine is disrupted and makes his views very obvious! It is easy to get into a routine, especially at work, so that days turn into weeks and months turn into years and suddenly you may wonder if life is passing you by. So this week’s question is ‘How often do you get out of your comfort zone?’ Sometimes it is easy to carry on with the same old routine, but trying something new could give you a different perspective on life. It could be something very basic like trying a different dish at a restaurant (after all we know all chocolate cakes are not the same!) or taking up a new hobby or just going somewhere new at the weekend. Have a go and see what happens. 2. Marathon update I spoke to Lisa this week and the training is going well and she is making good progress. It really is a case of one step at a time, so if you are trying something new it is fine to take baby steps. After all who of us as went from standing to running with nothing in between. As a child we were all constantly getting out of our comfort zones and trying something new, whether it be crawling, eating dirt or exploring our Grandparents’ ears! A child is one of the greatest models of curiosity that you could wish to find. Next time you get the chance just watch a baby looking around and taking things in, then deciding what needs more investigation and off the baby goes, not worrying about anything, just focussed on this new experience. Then give it a try for yourself. There is a great book called ‘ABC’s for Grown ups’ by Veronica Lim, which encourages you to remember what it was like to be a child and to have fun. It is thought provoking and has some interesting exercises based on what we all did as children. Give it a go and see what you think! 3. Up Close and PersonalWell autumn seems to have arrived. From my window, as I type, I look across the park and it is a great way to see the changing seasons as the trees reflect the time of year. Last week they were still green but this week they are amber and gold and the leaves are starting to drop. The clocks have gone back and winter is approaching. Time for warm nights in and thinking about Christmas arrangements, though I am not impressed that Christmas arrived in some shops back in September! I for one am avoiding those aisles until November at the earliest. Meanwhile I am back to my gym routine following my recent course and holiday and enjoying the new equipment that has arrived. A good motivation when the routine is starting to feel a bit repetitive. My gym is a good example of reframing; every December they redecorate and move all the equipment around so you get a new view, even if you stick to the same routine. A very good strategy!
